Hechi City is located in the northwestern part of Guangxi and the southern edge of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. It is located between 23°41′~25°37′ north latitude and 106°34′~109°09′ east longitude. It is connected to Liuzhou and Laibin in the east, Baise in the west, Nanning in the south, and Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province in the north. It is 228 kilometres wide from east to west and 260 kilometres long from north to south. The total area of the city is 33,500 square kilometres. It is an important access to coastal ports for the southwestern provinces and cities. The city governs 2 districts and 9 counties, with a total area of 33,500 square kilometres and a resident population of 3,353,600 people, inhabited by 8 hereditary ethnic groups, including Zhuang, Han, Yao, Mulao, Maonan, Miao, Dong and Shui, etc. It is a typical karst region, on the important geographic demarcation line between the tropics and the subtropics (latitude of 24.42 north, longitude of 108.03 east), and is under the dual influence of the highland climate and the oceanic climate, Hechi With four seasons like spring, Hechi is a magical and beautiful place, known as the ‘Hometown of World Longevity’, ‘China's first prefecture-level world longevity city’, ‘China's eco-health tourism demonstration base’ ‘Hometown of Copper Drums in China’, “Hydropower Capital of China”, “Hometown of Non-ferrous Metals in China”, “Hometown of Liu Sanjie, the Song Fairy of the Zhuang Nation”. ‘‘Hometown of Baiku Yao, the living fossil of human folk culture’’ “Southern China Karst World Natural Heritage Site”.


The territory of Hechi City belonged to the land of Baiyue in the pre-Qin period. In the 33rd year of Qin Shihuang (214 BC), when Qin unified the Lingnan region, Hechi City was under the jurisdiction of Guilin County.
During the Han Dynasty, most of Hechi belonged to Yulin County, while the three counties of Today's E, Nandan and Huanjiang belonged to Shekou County. In the sixth year of Yuan Ding of the Han Dynasty (111 BC). Dingzhou County was established within the jurisdiction of Yulin County, which was the earliest county-level administrative establishment in Hechi City. The area of Dingzhou County includes parts of 4 counties (districts) of Jinchengjiang, Yizhou, Fengshan and Donglan and 2 Yao Autonomous County of Du'an and Dahua.During the Three Kingdoms period, Hechi City belonged to the land of Ulin County of the State of Wu.During the Sui Dynasty, Hechi City partly belonged to Yulin County and partly belonged to Shi'an County.
During the Tang Dynasty, it was the beginning of the prefecture-level administrative establishment of present-day Hechi City. At that time, there were 2 prefectures in the east, Yizhou and Huanzhou, with a number of counties under the jurisdiction of each of the two prefectures. Most of the counties (districts) of Jinchengjiang, Yizhou, Nandan, Tian'e, Fenshan, Donglan, Luocheng, and Huanjiang are under the jurisdiction of these two prefectures; present-day Bama belongs to the jurisdiction of Tienzhou, and present-day Du'an and Dahua belong to the Sienzhou prefectural jurisdiction.

In the first year of Xianchun of the Song Dynasty (1265 AD), Qingyuan Prefecture was set up, with the jurisdiction of Yishan County, Tianhe County, Hechi County, Si'en County, Donglan Prefecture, Nandan Tujia, Nadi Tujia, and Xinxian County.
Yuan Dynasty to Yuan thirteen years (AD 1276) Qingyuan Province into the Qingyuan Road Pacification Division, to Yuan sixteen years (AD 1279) into the Qingyuan Road General Administration Office, the first year of the Dade (AD 1297) into the Qingyuan Nandan Xidong and other places of the military and civilian Pacification Division.
In the third year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1370 AD), the Qingyuan Nandan Military and Civilian Pacification Department was renamed the Qingyuan Prefecture.

Qing Dynasty, also known as Qingyuan Province, with jurisdiction over Hechi, Donglan 2 states, Yishan, Tianhe, Si'en 3 counties, Fengshan, Nadi, Nandan 3 states, Xincheng 1 county, Yongding governor, Yongshun is the governor, Yongshun deputy governor, 3 governors. Part of present-day E and Fengshan County belonged to Sicheng Prefecture, while present-day Du'an and Dahua autonomous counties belonged to Si'en Prefecture.
During the Republic of China period, 7 counties in the east of Hechi City belong to Qingyuan Administrative Inspectorate, Fengshan and Bama 2 counties belong to Baise Administrative Inspectorate, and Du'an and Dahua 2 autonomous counties belong to Wuming Administrative Inspectorate.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Qingyuan Prefecture was established in January 1950, and renamed Yishan Prefecture in February of the same year, with the jurisdiction of 9 counties, namely, Hechi, Yishan, Luocheng, Tianhe, Sien, Yibei, Nandan, Tian'e and Donglan, and Donglan County was reorganised to Baise Prefecture in May 1950, and Du'an County belonged to Baise Prefecture in May 1951, and Dahua County belonged to Wuming Prefecture.
In August 1951, Du'an County was transferred to the jurisdiction of Yishan Prefecture, and in July 1952, the two counties of Luocheng and Tianhe were merged into Tianluo County, which was soon renamed Luocheng County, and in August 1951, the two counties of Si'en and Yibei were merged into Huanjiang County. In August of the same year, Liuzhou Prefecture was merged into Yishan Prefecture, with 14 counties under the jurisdiction of Yishan, Luocheng, Huanjiang, Hechi, Nandan, Tian'e, Xincheng, Du'an, Liujiang, Liucheng, Shilong, Laibin, Rong'an and Sanjiang.
In April 1953, Du'an County was placed under the jurisdiction of the Guangxi Boys' Autonomous Region.
In March 1956, Yishan Prefecture was renamed Yishan District of Guixi Zhuang Autonomous Prefecture.
In January 1958, Yishan Area was renamed Yishan Prefecture; in July of the same year, Yishan Prefecture was renamed Liuzhou Prefecture.
On 1 August 1965, approved by the State Council, Hechi, Yishan, Luocheng, Huanjiang, Nandan, Tian'e 6 counties from Liuzhou Prefecture, Donglan, Fengshan, Bama 3 counties from Baise Prefecture, and Du'an Yao Autonomous County from Nanning Prefecture, a total of 10 mountainous counties were set up as Hechi Regional Commissioner's Office, with the office of the Commissioner's Office stationed in Jinchengjiang Township of Hechi County.
In March 1971, Hechi Commissioner's Office was changed to Hechi Regional Administrative Office.
In December 1987, Dahua Yao Autonomous County was established, the county area consists of Du'an, Bama 2 autonomous counties and some townships and towns in Mashan County of Nanning District, and is subordinate to Hechi District.
On 18 June 2002, the State Council approved the abolition of Hechi Area and the establishment of prefecture-level Hechi City; on 1 November of the same year, prefecture-level Hechi City was officially listed.
On 24 November 2016, the State Council approved the adjustment of the administrative division of Hechi City, agreeing to abolish the county-level Yizhou City and set up Yizhou District of Hechi City; and agreeing to move the resident of the People's Government of Hechi City to Yizhou District. After Yizhou was abolished and established as a district, the area under the jurisdiction of Hechi City could be expanded from 2,340 square kilometres to 6,209 square kilometres, and the population of the city district increased from 320,000 to 940,000 people.
